History
More than 50 years perfecting soil stabilization.
It all began about 50 years ago, when Dr. Gunther A. Scherr, president of Consolid AG, saw the need for a product that would improve soil stabilization for road building and the economics of that work: an effective product with greater bearing capacity, durability and a better price.
During the 1960s, Dr. Scherr formulated, manufactured and used a special, highly flexible asphalt emulsion for surface coatings, especially on roads that could not be built with conventional methods. The coating was laid on existing roads without changing the subsoil and base layers, and muddy roads kept their same characteristics.
Cohesive soils, which become plastic as their moisture content rises, revealed the need for — and the idea of — soil stabilization. Further research made it clear that the systems available worldwide at the time could not solve the problems of cohesive in-situ soils. No product on the market gave satisfactory results, so in the late sixties Dr. Scherr decided to develop his own range of soil stabilization products.
After extensive laboratory research and development, field trials showed remarkable results. The first field application took place in Italy in 1968. In 1973, Consolid AG was founded in Switzerland for ongoing research, development and worldwide marketing.
Success required taking human and environmental factors into account: non-toxic, non-polluting and no additional costs. With these specifications, the nano soil stabilization technology was developed and tested in fields such as Ravenna, Italy, and the mud lagoon of Valli di Comacchio.
Since 1985, production and marketing have been transferred step by step to regional companies, after the CONSOLID SYSTEM was approved and specified by engineers and used by authorities, contractors and builders in Europe, the United States, South America, South Africa, India, Australia and many other countries.
